Beach volleyball is an Olympic discipline since the Atlanta Olympics 96. Both male and female branch is the domain of the United States and Brazil, while Australia is also on the global podium.

The female partner of the United States, Kerri Walsh and Misty May, became the Olympic champion in Athens 2004 by beating the Brazilians Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar, two of the best players in the world.
